About Hematite

Hematite is a heavy, metallic iron oxide mineral with a stunning silver-grey to black colour and a mirror-like lustre that has earned it the nickname 'Mirror Stone'. Its name comes from the Greek 'haima', meaning blood, because when hematite is powdered it produces a deep red colour, and it has historically been associated with blood and vitality. Hematite is found worldwide, with major deposits in Brazil, Australia, England, and Canada. In ancient Rome, soldiers wore hematite amulets for courage and protection in battle, and it was ground into powder for wound healing. In Vedic tradition, hematite is associated with Mars and is used to ground excessive upper chakra energy into the root for balance and stability. At Reiki Heal, hematite is our primary grounding stone — it is like an anchor for the soul, pulling scattered, anxious, or excessive mental energy down into the earth for transmutation and release. This stone creates a powerful electromagnetic shield around the aura and is invaluable for anyone who feels ungrounded, spacey, or overwhelmed by life.

Crystal Care

Hematite can be rinsed briefly under running water but should not be soaked as it may rust. Smudging with sage or palo santo is the preferred cleansing method. Recharge it by placing it on a selenite plate or in moonlight. Store separately from softer stones as hematite's metallic surface can scratch them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hematite is used for intense grounding, energy shielding, mental focus, and absorbing negative energy. It creates an electromagnetic shield around the aura, calms anxiety, supports blood health, and is one of the most powerful grounding stones available.

Hematite can be placed in water briefly for cleansing, but it should not be soaked for extended periods as it contains iron which can rust over time. A quick rinse under running water is fine, but smudging or placing on selenite is the preferred cleansing method.

Natural hematite is weakly magnetic, though some specimens may not show noticeable magnetism. There are also artificially magnetised hematite stones sold for therapeutic use. The magnetic properties of hematite are believed to enhance its grounding and healing effects.

Wear hematite on your left hand (receiving hand) to absorb negative energy and ground yourself. Wear it on your right hand to project a protective shield outward. For general grounding, the left hand is recommended. For protection during challenging interactions, the right hand works well.
