Reiki Guide

Complete reference — Usui System of Natural Healing

The Philosophy of Reiki

Pure Divine Love — Reiki is completely unconditional, demanding nothing from giver or receiver.

Universally Accessible — Requires no dogma, creed, or belief in any supreme being — or even in Reiki itself.

Traditional Benefits — Balances body and mind to foster health, happiness, and prosperity (as Dr. Usui intended).

The Core Rules of Practice

1. Effortless Simplicity — Hands on, energy turns on; hands off, it turns off. Life force never makes mistakes.

2. A Lifetime Gift — A Master's attunement alters your energy permanently. It cannot be undone.

3. Energetic Boundaries — Energy flows from you to the client. You are a conduit for the Divine Source — you will never absorb their complaints or negative energies.

4. Professional Boundaries — Never diagnose or prescribe. Gently offer your perspective on how you would address the condition.

5. Ethical Responsibility — Honor the value of the energy exchange. You are not obligated to heal everyone. Release any guilt.

The Five Reiki Principles

Just for today...

1. I will not be angry.

2. I will not worry.

3. I will do my work honestly.

4. I will be kind to my neighbor and every living thing.

5. I will give thanks for my many blessings.

History of Reiki

In Japan, 'Reiki' is a generic term for any healing work based on life-force energy.

The specific system from Dr. Usui is Usui Shiki Ryoho (Usui System of Natural Healing).

No written instructions were left by Dr. Usui or Dr. Hayashi — the practice was passed through oral tradition by Mrs. Takata.

Contributors to the System:

- Dr. Usui: Core energy, symbols, attunement ability, Reiki Ideals, philosophy of energetic exchange.

- Dr. Hayashi: Standardized hand positions, three degrees, specific attunement methods.

- Mrs. Takata: Brought Reiki to the West, formal fee structure.

- Reiki Alliance: Waiting periods between levels.

Quote — Phyllis Furumoto: 'The Usui System is not static — it is designed to continuously evolve.'

Modern Context: After Mrs. Takata passed, teaching fragmented. Today many groups believe they hold the only 'authentic' version, though most practice a modified style. The Reiki Alliance (est. May 1983) is a support group for Reiki Masters, honoring the lineage through Phyllis Furumoto and Johannes Reindl.

Reiki Symbols — General Principles

Symbols are sacred and confidential — shared only during Second Degree training after attunement.

A symbol has no effect before attunement and immediate impact after.

Symbols connect directly with Higher Consciousness (Rei), not the subconscious.

Activation Method:

1. Draw the symbol once (physically with your hand or mentally).

2. Intone the name three times (aloud or silently).

Working with Symbols:

- Foundation (Precision): Symbols must be drawn and applied correctly.

- Evolution (Intuition): Meditate on symbols directly — each has its own intelligence.

Symbol 1: Cho Ku Rei (Power Symbol)

Meaning: 'To bring the power here'

Applications:

- Amplification: Instantly increases Reiki potency and flow.

- Sealing: Use at session start (open channel) and end (lock healing in).

- Space Clearing: Clears negative energy from rooms.

- Protection: Shields self, family, property on all levels (physical, emotional, psychic).

Symbol 2: Sei He Ki (Mental/Emotional Healing Symbol)

Meaning: 'God and humanity become One'

Applications:

- Emotional Balance: Relieves anxiety, depression, anger, fear.

- Neurological Harmony: Balances left/right brain hemispheres.

- Relationship Healing: Restores peace and communication.

- Habit Breaking: Supports rewiring for smoking, addiction, weight struggles.

- Memory Support: Enhances recall.

- Affirmation Amplifier: Embeds positive self-talk into the subconscious.

Habit-Healing Protocol:

1. Write your name, the habit, and draw Symbol #2 on paper.

2. Hold the paper for 20+ minutes daily.

3. Carry the paper with you.

4. If a compulsion arises, hold the paper, breathe, call upon the symbol.

Symbol 3: Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen (Distant Healing Symbol)

Meaning: 'The Divine in me connects with the Divine in you'

Capabilities:

- Spatial Freedom: Sends Reiki across any distance.

- No Boundaries: Physical space is an illusion — distance is no barrier.

- Focal Tools: Use a photograph to establish connection.

Future-Pacing (Sending Reiki Forward):

1. Write the time, date, and place of the future event.

2. Draw symbols #1, #3, #1 on the paper.

3. Hold between hands for several minutes.

4. The energy 'stores' like a battery, releasing when the event arrives.

Common uses: Job interviews, exams, medical appointments, surgeries, public speaking.

Timeline Healing (Sending Reiki to the Past):

- Specific Date: Focus on the approximate date, activate Distant Symbol, send Reiki back.

- Visual Focus: Use a photograph from that time period.

- Intuitive: State the problem — direct Reiki to the root cause.

Also applies to ancestral blockages and past-life traumas.

Pre-Session Preparation

The Space: Clear the room (visualization, smudge stick, or pennyroyal oil). Wash hands before and after.

Client Introduction: Explain the Reiki process. Describe hand positions. Answer questions.

Comfort: Use a massage table with a chair and arm cushion. Awkward positioning slows Reiki flow.

Self-Preparation Sequence:

1. Do Reiki on yourself (hands on solar plexus).

2. Create protective triangle on yourself.

3. Draw Symbol #1 on each palm.

4. Draw Symbol #1 from crown to solar plexus.

5. Draw large Symbol #1 for the room.

6. Draw Symbol #1 over the client's body.

Complete Reiki Treatment Sequence

Opening:

- Ask client to close eyes, relax, take 3 deep breaths.

- Visualize all three symbols on the client's heart.

- Draw #1, #2, #1 over the client's head.

- Silently repeat 3 times: 'Higher Self, please communicate with my Higher Self.'

Front Positions:

- Head: Use Symbol #2 at position #2 to connect with Higher Self.

- Continue downward inch by inch — 4 front positions total.

- Feet: Do before abdomen.

- Abdomen: Follow feet.

- Seal: Draw Symbol #1 on solar plexus.

Back Positions:

- Client turns over. Draw Symbol #1 on their back.

- Cover 5 back positions.

- Close with Symbol #1 on lower back.

Closing:

- Hold ankles for grounding.

- Cleanse aura head-to-foot 3 times.

- Offer a glass of water to flush toxins.

- Say mentally: 'Bless and Dismiss' 3 times.

Distant Healing Methods

Beaming Method:

- Draw #1, #3, #1. Face palms toward the client.

- Imagine hands as radar dishes focusing energy.

- May also direct Reiki through your eyes.

Knee Visualization Method:

- Right knee = Front of body | Left knee = Back of body

- Knee = Head | Thigh = Torso | Hip = Legs and feet

Surrogate Method:

- Use a teddy bear, doll, pillow, or photograph.

- Perform the full treatment on the surrogate.

- Close: 'Take what you can use from this healing.'

Group Methods:

- Spiral: Practitioners sit in a line, each facing the back of the person in front. Outer end directs combined energy to recipient. Visualize a clockwise spiral; draw #1, #3, #1 together.

- Circle: All sit in a circle facing palms toward the center. Recipient's photo at center. Draw #1, #3, #1. Say recipient's name aloud 3 times. Beam energy for 5-15 minutes.

Goal-Setting with Reiki

If you've been blocked in achieving a goal, something within needs healing first.

Reiki Goal Ritual:

1. Write your name on paper.

2. Write your goal (include dates if relevant).

3. Draw all three Reiki symbols on the paper.

4. Reiki the paper for 20+ minutes daily.

5. Actively work toward the goal.

If aligned with your higher good, you will achieve it.

Three-Dimensional Crystal Triangle uses: Protection in any environment | Meditation support | Cleansing of energy bodies | Control and safety in unwanted situations.

Morning Affirmations

Say each three times at the start of your day

1. 'I give myself permission to accept and welcome all events and situations today with love, joy, and peace in my heart — together with courage, humility, and humor.'

2. 'I give myself permission to love myself, accept myself as I am, forgive myself, and remain open to learning and change.'

Key Quotes

'Reiki energy comes from a higher source — it is never our personal energy. Release expectations of how results will appear. Trust that whatever unfolds will be for your highest good.'

'Be flexible and open, allowing the energy to move freely. Healing becomes more effective when you release control over the when and how.'

'These are extraordinary times, filled with opportunities for discovery and the growth of higher consciousness. Let us take charge of our lives and turn today's challenges into an exciting adventure.'
