What is a jap mala and how is it used?▾
A jap mala is a string of 108 beads used for counting mantras during meditation or prayer. Hold the mala in your right hand, use your thumb to pull each bead toward you while reciting your mantra, and complete one full round of 108 repetitions. The guru bead (extra bead at the end) is not counted — when you reach it, you can either stop or reverse direction.
How many beads are in a crystal mala?▾
Traditional malas have 108 beads plus 1 guru bead. The number 108 is sacred in many spiritual traditions — it represents the wholeness of existence. Some of our malas also come in 27-bead (¼ mala) or 21-bead wrist mala formats for portable use.
